Waters of the Nile | Crocodile & Hippo Figurine Set

This unique bundle from the De Rosa Collections brings together two powerful yet often misunderstood creatures: the Nile crocodile and the hippopotamus; each hand-sculpted in ceramic and elevated with vibrant enamel, gold, and platinum detailing. Forged through a patient, artisanal process in Uruguay, every figurine is one-of-a-kind and reveals the soul of the animal through texture, posture, and tone.
Together, this set tells a story of contrast and coexistence, of calm giants and quiet predators, of life beside the riverbank, where danger and peace live side by side.

1. Hippo with Water Lily

Dimensions: 11×07×08 cm (4 3/8″×2 3/4″×3 1/8″) | Issue Year: 2013
This hippo leans into joy. Its open mouth curls upward in a subtle smile, while its rounded form is dressed in deep indigo and lavender glazes. Gold-tipped ears and toes give the figure warmth and richness. On its back, a single water lily rests, sculpted with fine petals and blooming from a central yellow blossom.
The flower softens the figure’s bulk, turning this powerful animal into a symbol of inner peace. Often seen as aggressive in the wild, the hippopotamus here becomes serene, suggesting strength without threat, and beauty held lightly.

2. Baby Hippo with Water Lily

Dimensions: 08×05×08 cm (3 1/8″×1 7/8″×3 1/8″) | Issue Year: 2013
This smaller companion mirrors the adult’s expression and palette. Its body is compact and gently curved, with big eyes, a rounded snout, and that same playful smile. The blue glaze changes in tone across the form, while gold accents trace the contours and define the miniature water lily.
As a pair, these hippos suggest nurturing, care, and quiet companionship. They carry the energy of play and protection - of heavy feet and light hearts.

3. Mini Hippo

Dimensions: 04×04×04 cm (1 5/8″×1 5/8″×1 5/8″) | Issue Year: 2014
The smallest of the trio is stylized and simplified. This figure skips detail in favor of shape and expression. Deep navy blends with golden wave-like bands across its body, forming a kind of abstract armor. Its wide eyes look upward with quiet curiosity.
Though tiny, it doesn’t disappear. It holds its space with charm, like a river stone polished by years of current. It adds a light note to the set, offering contrast and gentle focus.

4. Nile Crocodile

Dimensions: 13×11×05 cm (5 1/8″×4 3/8″×1 7/8″) | Issue Year: 2012
This is a striking piece. The Nile crocodile’s body arcs slightly in motion, with gold, bronze, turquoise, and earth-toned enamel forming a mosaic across its back. The head is lifted, and the mouth is subtly upturned; more inquisitive than aggressive. The figure is textured with etched scales, while its underbelly glows in smooth ivory and gold.
The crocodile, ancient and watchful, is a symbol of survival, memory, and power held quietly. This sculpture leans into those meanings with reverence, not fear. It captures not only the creature, but its aura.

5. Baby Nile Crocodile

Dimensions: 09×06×07 cm (3 1/2″×2 3/8″×2 3/4″) | Issue Year: 2012
The baby crocodile stays close to the adult in form and finish, though slightly brighter in tone. Its body curls with energy, and the face is lifted in alertness. The same mosaic design is present, but in smaller, tighter patches, like the early markings of a growing creature.
It brings balance to the set. With its size and spirit, it bridges the gap between symbolism and personality, making the crocodile not just a relic of myth but a character of its own.
This bundle is a dialogue between opposites. Hippos and crocodiles share territory in the real world, often with tension. But here, they rest in harmony. These aren’t just animals. They’re archetypes of might that isn’t hostile, of beauty shaped through detail and time.
In mythology, the crocodile appears as a guardian of sacred waters, a protector of transitions and boundaries. The hippo, especially in ancient Egypt, was seen as both maternal and fierce, tied to fertility and protection. Together, they tell a story of presence: heavy-footed, low to the earth, but rich in symbolic weight.
There’s elegance in their mass, grace in their stillness. The enamel, gold, and platinum don’t cover them; they reveal their shape. Their forms ask us not to rush past, but to pause - to see beauty in the creatures we often overlook.
