There’s something missing in the speed of everyday life; something quiet, rooted, and handmade. You reach for beauty, but all you get is sameness. You want to slow down. Feel something real. And here it is...

This hand-thrown chawan tea bowl from Sueyoshi, Okinawa, carries the kind of presence that doesn’t need to shout. At 12 cm wide and 9 cm tall, it fits in the palm with a grounded, round weight.

The base is cut with care, unglazed where the fire kissed the clay directly. The walls are warm stone-beige, with a high-gloss finish just short of glassy.

Around the mouth, a faint amber pooling hints at the glaze’s drift and depth. But what pulls your eye, again and again, is the sweeping burst of hand-painted brushwork: greens, reds, black, ochre, laid down like a quick breath. Loose, vivid, and alive. The glaze pattern doesn’t follow form, for it gracefully dances around it. And because it was done by hand, no other bowl will ever look just like this.

This piece is part of the Vintage Japanese Ceramic Bowls collection, each one selected for looks, and for the life it holds. Kogei, the Japanese idea of craft as living art, shows up here in every line. You’ll find a touch of Koishiwara ware in the body, with strong sentiments of traditional Japanese ceramics. But this bowl leans playful. The brushwork has personality. The curves feel spontaneous. It’s not pretending to be perfect. Nor is it trying to impress. And that’s what makes it feel human.

Use it as a Japanese matcha bowl for a morning tea ritual, or let it carry fruit, rice, or broth. No matter how you use it, this isn’t just a vessel. It’s an invitation to notice more; to bring color, touch, and heat into small moments.

And if you're building a collection of collectible Japanese tea bowls or chawan tea bowls, this one brings contrast and brightness. It’s not soft-spoken. It’s spirited.

The wooden box it comes in is signed, with calligraphy and a deep violet cloth, typical of handmade Japanese pottery packaging. There’s proof in the mark. The care is there.

These bowls aren’t mass-made. They don’t wait around. And when they’re gone, they’re gone. Bring one into your daily life and let it teach you something about the art of slowing down.

Many of these bowls are vintage and may have small cracks, stains, or chips.

They were originally made in Japan for drinking tea (HS: 6912.00 or 6911.10), but we sell them as decorative items (HS: 6913.10) since there are no test results or certificates.

Some bowls come with free outer boxes (wood or cardboard), but this varies by item.
