Have you ever poured tea into a bowl and wondered why it felt so disconnected from the moment?
Those smooth, uniform ceramics can feel sterile. This Shirokumo Ripple Chawan might be the gentle pause you’ve been searching for.
It’s 12.3 cm across and 7.4 cm tall, just right to cradle in two hands. The shape is softly rounded, like ripples in a quiet pond, and wheel-thrown ridges wrap around the sides. Those grooves catch the light and guide your fingers, grounding you as you hold it. The off-white glaze drips subtly toward the base, revealing warm terracotta clay in the foot.
On the bottom, the clay remains exposed in a rough ring, a reminder of the earth at its core.
Inside, the glaze deepens slightly, with tiny crackle lines that feel like a delicate frost. It lends depth to each sip and creates a gentle translucence where your steam meets the bowl. There’s a small glaze flaw, an uneven pool near the rim, that feels intimate, a trace of the maker’s hand. And the clay has soft speckles, naturally embedded, each one a fingerprint of the original clay.
This bowl carries centuries of Japanese kogei, merging purpose with quiet beauty. It doesn’t demand praise, for it invites presence. While it’s not marked and its origin is unknown, that adds to its soul. It could belong anywhere, yet it feels at home in your tea corner, countertop, or display shelf. It bridges Japanese tea culture and wabi sabi pottery in everyday life.
If you’ve hesitated over fragile-looking chawan, this one asks nothing more than gentle care. It’s sturdy enough for matcha in the morning and ramen or salad later in the day. The exposed foot grips the table, steady and calm, with no drama, and certainly no slipping. It’s handmade Japanese pottery that fits into real moments, not museum displays.
So, when your day feels fast or disconnected, let your fingers follow those ripples. Let the imperfect glaze bloom, heat, and steam as you sip. This collectible Japanese tea bowl isn’t about perfection.
On the contrary, it’s about pause and presence...
May it become a vessel you return to, the one that makes the simple things feel quietly sacred.
