This Satsuma cut glass pitcher and cup set showcases the artistry of Satsuma Vidro, a traditional craft from Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The set includes one pitcher and two small cups, all crafted using a double-layer overlay technique. This process fuses two striking colors - gold red and lapis lazuli blue - over clear crystal, producing a vivid depth of color that changes with light and movement.

The interplay between the warm red and deep blue creates a unique visual contrast, giving each piece a jewel-like quality. The design bridges Japanese tradition and modern design, making it suitable for both Japanese and non-Japanese-style dining.

In addition to the striking gold red-lapis lazuli set, this collection is also available in a green-lapis lazuli Satsuma Kiriko variant. Crafted with the same double-layer overlay technique, the combination of deep lapis blue and fresh green crystal creates a cooler, more subtle contrast compared to the warmer red design.

The cuts reflect light beautifully, giving the glassware a luminous quality that shifts between green and blue depending on the angle. This green-lapis lazuli edition is slightly more affordable than the gold-red version, though it carries the same level of craftsmanship and artistry. It remains a fine choice for those seeking authentic Satsuma Kiriko glassware, handmade Japanese drinkware, and traditional Kagoshima cut crystal at a more accessible price point.

1. Double-Covered Katakuchi Sake Bottle (Gold Red - Lapis Lazuli)

This double-layered Katakuchi sake server is made using Satsuma Kiriko (Satsuma cut glass), a craft with roots in Kagoshima during the mid-19th century. The piece is created by layering transparent crystal with two colored coatings: deep lapis lazuli blue and warm gold red. The result is a striking gradation that shifts under light, highlighting the precision of each cut.

The body features cross-hatched Edo-style cuts, which catch and refract light into star-like patterns. This design is also symbolic; geometric cuts in Japanese glass often represent prosperity, harmony, and balance. The gently curved spout makes it practical for serving sake, shochu, or even chilled wine, while the rounded form sits steadily in the hand.

Traditionally, katakuchi vessels have been used in tea ceremonies and sake gatherings, symbolizing hospitality and the act of sharing. In modern use, this glass bridges both Japanese and Western dining, making it equally at home on a lacquer tray or a contemporary bar table. The vivid contrast of gold-red against lapis lazuli brings a sense of depth and refinement, enhancing the ritual of pouring sake.

This piece is housed in a handcrafted paulownia wood box, a material prized in Japan for its ability to protect delicate items from humidity and temperature changes. It is suitable for gifting and is often chosen for occasions such as weddings, anniversaries, or housewarmings, where it carries the meaning of longevity and respect.

Size: Φ8.5 × H9.5 cm (3.34 × 3.74 in.)

Material: Crystal glass (double-coated)

Craft: Satsuma Kiriko (Satsuma cut glass)

Box: Paulownia wood storage box

2. Double-Covered Katakuchi Sake Bottle (Green - Lapis Lazuli)

This version of the Katakuchi sake server combines lapis lazuli blue with a vibrant green overlay, producing a cooler and more refreshing gradation of color. Using the same Satsuma Kiriko cutting technique, each line and pattern is etched by hand to reveal layers of color with depth and clarity.

The contrast of green and blue evokes natural imagery (forest and sky, sea and stone), reflecting the Japanese appreciation of seasonal beauty. The cuts form diamond-shaped facets that scatter light like water ripples, creating a dynamic visual experience with every pour.

Like its gold-red counterpart, this katakuchi is designed for function and symbolism. The wide-mouthed form allows smooth pouring, while the crafted base provides balance. It is suitable for both traditional sake service and modern table settings, whether paired with fine Japanese cuisine or Western dishes.

Presented in a paulownia box, this piece makes an excellent gift, embodying both practicality and artistry. Its cooler tones make it especially fitting for summer celebrations, where green and blue suggest freshness and renewal.

Size: Φ8.7 × H9.5 cm (3.42 × 3.74 in.)
