This pair of Satsuma Kiriko faceted cups by Satsuma Vidro showcases the depth and brilliance of double-layered crystal artistry. Each piece is crafted by overlaying transparent crystal glass with two different colors: lapis lazuli blue combined with either rich gold-red or green—then deeply cut and polished to reveal a mesmerizing gradation effect.
The design features two symbolic motifs:
- Chrysanthemum cuts at the upper section, a flower revered in Japan as a symbol of longevity and dignity.
- Flowing water patterns at the base, representing purity, continuity, and the ever-changing flow of life.
Together, the motifs evoke harmony, resilience, and beauty, adding meaning to the brilliant geometric patterns.
The Art of Satsuma Faceting
Satsuma Kiriko originated in the late Edo period in Kagoshima Prefecture and was famously called the “phantom faceting” technique because it flourished for only about twenty years before disappearing. Over a century later, the craft was revived with painstaking research, and today it survives as one of Japan’s most admired forms of cut glass.
The defining characteristic of Satsuma glassware is the thick application of colored layers (at least 1 mm), which allows artisans to cut deeply into the glass. The result is a striking play of light, color, and depth. The blurring effect (a natural gradient where colors meet) creates luminous transitions, giving each piece its unique radiance.
Function and Versatility
While traditionally referred to as soba choko (buckwheat noodle cups), these glasses are versatile and suited to many roles on the dining table:
As a cup for cold dishes or side servings
As a dessert bowl for ice cream, fruit, or sweets
As a small display piece for flowers or seasonal greenery
As a decorative art object simply admired in a cabinet
The compact size and weighted stability make them easy to handle while showcasing the elegance of traditional craftsmanship.
A Gift of Lasting Value
Presented in an original paulownia wood box tied with Sanada string, the set carries a sense of refinement and permanence. In Japan, paulownia wood has long been associated with protection and auspicious occasions, enhancing the value of the gift.
Because it is a pair, the set makes a meaningful present for couples, weddings, anniversaries, or housewarmings. With its vibrant brilliance and cultural symbolism, this set is not only functional tableware but also an heirloom-quality keepsake.
