These handcrafted Satsuma Kiriko cut glass carafes showcase the refined beauty of traditional Japanese crystal cutting. Produced in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, each piece blends classic craftsmanship with modern design. The layered crystal is made using a double overlay technique, combining lapis lazuli blue with either gold red or green, creating striking gradations of color that shift with light.
The precise cuts bring out diamond-like reflections, making each carafe a centerpiece on both Japanese and Western-style tables. Every piece is housed in a paulownia wood box, tied with a Sanada string, making it suitable as a formal gift.
Variants
Carafe with Cups (Gold Red - Lapis Lazuli)
A two-piece set featuring a carafe and cup, layered in vivid lapis lazuli and rich gold red. The deep tones reflect warmth and elegance, ideal for gatherings and ceremonial settings.
Carafe with Cups (Green - Lapis Lazuli)
A two-piece set with fresh green tones layered with lapis lazuli. The cool gradation gives a refreshing impression, suitable for summer dining or contemporary interiors.
Carafe Only (Gold Red - Lapis Lazuli)
The gold red and lapis lazuli overlay creates bold, contrasting tones. Without cups, this variant emphasizes the carafe itself as a striking art object.
Carafe Only (Green - Lapis Lazuli)
Featuring green and lapis lazuli tones, this version emphasizes calmness and clarity. Its layered transparency captures light in a way that shifts from soft to sharp brilliance.
Cultural Significance
Satsuma Kiriko (薩摩切子) originated in the Edo period and is known for its distinctive color layering. Unlike single-layered cut glass, Satsuma Kiriko overlays richly colored crystal on clear glass, then carves through the surface to reveal intricate gradations. This technique is unique to southern Japan and is recognized as a cultural treasure.
The choice of lapis lazuli blue symbolizes depth, wisdom, and stability, while gold red conveys vitality, celebration, and auspiciousness. Green represents renewal, growth, and balance. Together, these carafes embody harmony between tradition and nature.
Craftsmanship
Each carafe is carefully cut and polished by skilled artisans trained in Satsuma Vidro techniques. The process requires precision and patience, as each facet must be hand-carved to achieve symmetry and brilliance. No two pieces are exactly alike, making every item a one-of-a-kind creation.
Because these are not heat-resistant glass, they should not be used with hot liquids or placed in dishwashers. They are designed for cool beverages and display purposes, with their brilliance best appreciated under natural or ambient light.
