This tall pewter vase, named Ripples, is made by Osaka Suzuki, one of Japan’s most respected producers of Osaka Naniwa Pewter Ware. Each piece is crafted by hand in Osaka by a team that includes nationally certified artisans, traditional craftsmen, and skilled specialists who have dedicated their careers to preserving and refining techniques passed down for more than three centuries.
Osaka Naniwa Pewter Ware traces its roots to the Edo period, when artisans developed a reputation for exceptional skill in working with tin. Pewter, made primarily from high-purity tin, is naturally resistant to rust and discoloration. This makes it both beautiful and long-lasting. In addition to its durability, tin is valued in Japan for its ability to purify water and enhance the flavor of beverages. Traditionally, it has been used for sake and tea vessels, but the same qualities bring a sense of refinement to decorative items like this vase.
The surface of the Ripples vase is finished with a distinctive hand-applied texture. This pattern, reminiscent of water stirred by a gentle breeze, catches light in a soft, shifting way. The cylindrical form and minimalist profile make it suitable for both Japanese and modern interiors, allowing flowers or branches to stand out while the vase quietly complements the arrangement.
Each vase begins as raw tin, melted and cast before being shaped and polished on a lathe. The rippled surface is created through careful hand-tooling, a process that demands precision and control. The final piece is presented in a paulownia wood box, a traditional Japanese packaging method that protects the vase from humidity and temperature changes.
As a functional object, the vase can hold fresh or dried floral arrangements, but it is equally suited as a standalone decorative piece. Its symbolism, rooted in water, purity, and continuity—makes it a fitting gift for special occasions such as weddings, anniversaries, or housewarmings.
