This Tenmoku-style chawan from Koishiwara, Fukuoka is a quiet force. Finished in a deep, almost mirror-black glaze, the surface changes delicately between dark amber and charcoal depending on the light.
Inside, a soft reflective glow moves across the curved interior like moonlight on still water. The bowl’s dark richness is visual and tactile. The form is broad at the lip, tapering gently to a narrower base, giving the piece a grounded presence in your hands.
Measuring 14 cm across and 9.5 cm tall, it carries the balance of something carefully made, not rushed. The glaze pools heavier at the bottom, creating a dense, glossy shadow effect, while the foot remains unglazed; raw, sandy, and warm to the touch, a reminder of the clay’s origin and the maker’s hand.
You can see the careful firing in the tiny pinholes along the foot ring, and the potter’s subtle seal pressed into the base adds a quiet mark of authorship.
Our vintage Japanese ceramic bowls are rich in centuries-old artistry and handcrafted detail. Pain meets purpose: these bowls show you a world where function and beauty come together. This bowl magnificently showcases traditional Japanese craftsmanship, using the ancient Tenmoku glazing technique that dates back over 800 years. It’s an heirloom. Whether used for whisking matcha, sipping broth, or resting on a shelf as art, it invites stillness into the moment.
Each piece in this collection carries unique charm. No two bowls are the same. Their hand-thrown silhouettes and timeworn glazes are full of character. And while they’re made for use (think tea, rice, or dessert), they also speak to the deeper tradition of kogei, the Japanese philosophy that views everyday crafts as expressions of art. These are bowls shaped by fire, time, and human touch. You feel it immediately.
We source authentic vintage Japanese bowls like this one for their depth, quality, and story. From lacquer-like Tenmoku to floral Imari and rustic stoneware, each piece is vetted by eye, touch, and background; for its maker’s mark, firing technique, condition, and soul.
This collection features rare finds like Longquan-style celadon, carved and ribbed pottery, and Japanese crackle glaze ceramics that nod to both Song dynasty style and wabi sabi design. You’ll find celadon tea bowls, hand-shaped matcha chawans, and quiet works of ceramic precision, all fired in traditional kilns across Japan. From leaf-pattern bowls to high-fired black glazes like this one, every piece brings the calm and clarity of tea culture into your hands.
With each bowl, you get both utility and a moment. A quiet morning. A shared drink. A sense of calm that remains. This is real Japanese kogei. Functional, beautiful, and honest.
Add this bowl to your collection while it’s here, and let it become part of your daily routine.
