This handcrafted beckoning cat, called Cat’s Invitation Brain (Multi), blends the charm of traditional Yumino dolls with the energy of contemporary art. Made in Saga, Japan, it is a collaboration between Eguchi Doll Store, a workshop with over 140 years of history in the Yumino district of Takeo City, and local artist Bond Tominaga.

The figurine is shaped in a more slender and modern style than the classic manekineko, yet retains its role as a symbol of prosperity and good fortune. Its surface is covered in vivid abstract patterns (red, blue, yellow, black, and earthy tones) layered in bold brushstrokes that create a sense of movement and depth. This color work is inspired by Tominaga’s “bond art,” giving the piece a one-of-a-kind appearance.

The manekineko (beckoning cat) has long been a talisman in Japan, believed to attract customers, success, and happiness. Traditionally placed near entrances of shops or homes, it is seen as an invitation to good luck. This version turns the familiar figure into a work of modern art while preserving its meaning, making it suitable both as a decorative object and as a gift for housewarmings, store openings, or milestone celebrations.

Each cat is sculpted from clay by Seiji Eguchi using traditional Yumino doll techniques, then hand-painted and detailed by the artist. As a result, no two are exactly alike, adding to the individuality of each piece.

2nd Variant:

Colorful vertically striped beckoning cat, handcrafted in Saga, Japan.
A collaboration between Eguchi Doll Store, known for over 140 years of Yumino doll-making in Takeo City, and artist Bond Tominaga, this piece blends tradition with modern art. Seiji Eguchi shaped the figure using classic Yumino techniques, while Tominaga applied his signature bond art style, creating bold vertical stripes in rich, vivid colors accented with glossy black.

The slender, upright form offers a contemporary take on the traditional manekineko, a cultural symbol believed to attract prosperity, customers, and good fortune. Ideal as a striking decorative piece for the home or office, it also makes a meaningful gift for occasions such as housewarmings or store openings.
