This Iga Hanaiiri vase from Mashino Kiln is handcrafted in Mie Prefecture, Japan, using clay dug from the Iga region. Iga ware is known for its dense, fire-resistant soil, rich in feldspar and silica, which creates a strong, textured surface after firing. The kiln process naturally produces distinctive beadro (glass-like natural glaze spots), charred firing marks, and deep scarlet tones. No two pieces are exactly the same, as the final colors and textures depend on the clay’s natural composition and how it reacts in the kiln.
The tall cylindrical body has a ridged upper section and a rougher lower half with carved patterns and rope-style side handles. Its surface shows the warm, pure feel of unpolished clay, embodying the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi - valuing imperfection, natural form, and the passage of time.
Iga ware has over 700 years of history, originally made for storage and tea ceremony use. This vase continues that tradition, designed for displaying seasonal flowers or as a statement piece on its own. Its earthy tones pair well with natural interiors, Japanese-style alcoves (tokonoma), and minimalist spaces. The robust build allows for daily use while celebrating craftsmanship that connects modern life to centuries of pottery heritage.
