These Kumiko lanterns highlight the traditional Japanese woodworking technique of Kumiko joinery, where small pieces of wood are fitted together without nails or metal. Made from Akita cedar, each lantern is carefully handcrafted, allowing the warm glow of light to filter through the intricate Asanoha (hemp leaf) pattern.

The hemp leaf design has deep cultural meaning in Japan. Because hemp grows straight and strong, the pattern symbolizes growth, vitality, and family well-being. It has long been used in temples, fabrics, and interior design as a wish for protection and happiness. When lit, the latticework projects delicate shadows that transform the atmosphere of a room into something calm and contemplative.

These lanterns were developed under the “Hyakunen Monogatari” (One Hundred Year Story) project in Niigata Prefecture, with guidance from renowned architect and designer Masayuki Kurokawa. The result is lighting that merges traditional craft with innovative three-dimensional design.

A compact andon-style lamp with a balanced square form. The Asanoha pattern decorates its cedar frame, producing fine light and shadow effects. Its smaller size makes it ideal for side tables, shelves, or as an intimate accent in bedrooms and living rooms. It also makes a meaningful gift for housewarmings or new beginnings.
