The Kiriko Stand Light series by Murayama Mokko brings together traditional Japanese woodworking with symbolic motifs that carry deep cultural meaning. Each lamp is crafted in Kyoto using the art of Kyo Sashimono joinery, a precise method of building wooden structures without nails or metal fittings. This time-honored craft emphasizes balance, discipline, and harmony in design.

Each light is structured in a geometric cube form, with cutout lattice sides made from Kyoto-grown Hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa). This wood is prized in Japan for its smooth texture, golden tone, and calming fragrance. When illuminated, the carved panels project intricate shadows onto surrounding surfaces, filling the room with soft, atmospheric light.

These stand lamps are available in six different motifs, each symbolizing good fortune, protection, and longevity. They serve as both functional lighting and cultural art pieces, making them ideal for interiors that value refinement and quiet atmosphere. Whether used in a bedroom, living room, tea space, or study, they create a sense of stillness and grounding.

The Six Motifs

1. Square (Masu)
The square grid represents the measuring box for rice (masu), a symbol of harvest and abundance. In Japanese tradition, this pattern is auspicious and thought to bring prosperity and good fortune.

2. Flowing Water (Nagare Mizu)
The flowing water motif symbolizes purity and renewal. Water is seen as a force that washes away hardship and misfortune while always remaining clear and life-giving.

3. Hemp Leaf (Asanoha)
The hemp leaf design is associated with vitality and resilience. The hemp plant grows fast and straight, and the pattern is thought to encourage healthy growth, strength, and protection from harm.

4. Cloisonné (Shippo)
The Shippo pattern, meaning “seven treasures,” represents harmony, happiness, and continuity. Overlapping circles symbolize interconnectedness and the prosperity of future generations.

5. Suminagashi (Ink Flow)
Inspired by the art of ink marbling, a practice seen since the Heian period (794-1185 CE), this motif reflects movement, impermanence, and beauty in natural patterns.

6. Arabesque (Karakusa)
The arabesque pattern represents vine-like plants spreading in all directions. It is a symbol of growth, vitality, and longevity, often associated with wishes for family prosperity and the flourishing of descendants.
