This round incense container, known as a kogo, is a fine example of Owari cloisonné enamelware. It features the Kikuzume (chrysanthemum-packed) design, where chrysanthemum blossoms fill the entire surface with no gaps. Each petal and leaf is outlined with thin silver wires, a hallmark of the wired cloisonné technique (called yusen shippo in Japanese).

The chrysanthemum, or kiku, has deep cultural value in Japan. It’s a symbol of longevity, renewal, and imperial heritage. It’s also linked to autumn and often appears in art, crafts, and family crests. In this design, the flowers are arranged boldly and densely, showing the highest level of detail and discipline.

The base is made from copper, coated in silver wire, and finished with layers of glassy enamel glaze. The result is a smooth, lustrous surface with a jewel-like finish. Each piece is fired multiple times in a kiln to achieve its vibrant, long-lasting colors. The enamel coating is strong but still delicate. It must be handled with care.

This kogo is made by Kato Shippo Seisakusyo, a long-standing workshop in Aichi Prefecture, the birthplace of Owari cloisonné. Every piece is made by hand, using traditional tools and methods passed down through generations.

The small round form makes it ideal for holding incense, small keepsakes, or simply as a display piece. It fits well in both Japanese-style rooms and modern interiors.

Because of the time-intensive process, this item is made to order and takes about 12 weeks to deliver.
