Some mornings are too quiet. The kind where your mind starts racing before your hands have even touched the kettle. The kind where the day feels rushed before it’s even begun. You reach for something steady, something that slows time for just a second. That’s where this bowl comes in.
Handmade in the Shimizu area of Kyoto, this vintage Japanese ceramic bowl was crafted with intention. You can see it in the raised white chrysanthemum petals, soft but pronounced under your fingertips.
The flowers are spaced evenly, each one blooming from a center of dotted umber, as if carefully arranged for your eyes alone.
Between them, deep pools of plum-colored glaze spill down in irregular patches. It doesn't feel painted, for it feels poured. There's something alive in the contrast between the clean floral design and the wandering, inky purple. The tension between control and letting go. The same tension in you, maybe.
The outer surface has a fine crackled finish under the glaze, giving the bowl its subtle aged texture... something your hand feels before your eyes even notice.
Inside, the bowl is smooth and quiet. Just a pale cream, like milk stirred into tea. No decoration, no noise. It invites calm. At 12.5 cm wide and 8.1 cm high, it's not oversized, but it has presence. The foot is clean and balanced, with a quiet confidence in its shape.
This is traditional Japanese ceramics rooted in centuries of practice, but it doesn’t feel stiff or formal. It’s warm. It’s made for use. The accompanying box and paperwork confirm its origin, but the real proof is in the bowl itself; how it feels in your hands, how it grounds your day.
Whether you collect antique Japanese bowls or just want one honest piece of handmade Japanese pottery to return to, this one’s worth sitting with. It just stays...
