The KIKU Gradation Vase is a rare, one-of-a-kind example of Kiriko craftsmanship. Made in Tokyo, it is shaped from natural soda glass, cut entirely by hand, and polished without the use of chemicals. This traditional approach gives the surface a brilliance and depth that surpasses most standard Edo Kiriko glassware. Every facet catches and reflects light, revealing complex patterns that shift as you move around it.

The vase’s design features an intricate asanoha (hemp leaf) motif, a pattern long used in Japanese art to symbolize growth, protection, and resilience. The motif is carved with precision into alternating vertical panels, creating a striking contrast between detailed texture and smooth glass. Its color flows from clear at the top to a deep blue at the base, an effect known as gradation that mirrors the changing tones of water or the sky.

The narrow neck and rounded base make it ideal for displaying a small arrangement of flowers, such as a single branch or a minimalist bouquet, in line with the Japanese principle of ikebana flower arranging. When placed in sunlight or filled with water, the vase refracts light to produce delicate, shimmering patterns on nearby surfaces.

Kiriko glass cutting has a long history in Japan, originating in Edo (modern Tokyo) during the 19th century. This vase is a modern continuation of that tradition, crafted with the same dedication to detail but with a unique color and form not found in mass-produced works. Each piece is created by hand from start to finish, ensuring no two are exactly alike.

Because the glass is not heat-resistant, it should be protected from sudden temperature changes, and abrasive cleaning tools should be avoided to preserve the polished finish.
