The Kasaneirome Kirara Rock Glass is a brilliant example of Edo Kiriko craftsmanship, created by Tatsuya Nemoto, a Master of Traditional Crafts. Produced by Kagami Crystal in Ibaraki Prefecture, this piece showcases the refined artistry of Japan’s most celebrated cut glass tradition.

The name Kirara refers to sparkle or radiance, and this glass lives up to that meaning. Its design resembles a kaleidoscope, where layers of color and sharply cut patterns create dazzling reflections that shift with light and angle. Viewed from above, the star-shaped cuts form a striking geometric motif, while the body of the glass features a cascade of detailed patterns that balance elegance with boldness.

Craftsmanship and Technique

The glass is made using the Kasaneirome (layered color) method, in which layers of colored and clear crystal are combined before being cut by hand. This technique adds depth and dimension, giving the patterns a vibrant, three-dimensional effect. Each cut requires precision and experience, producing a flawless finish that captures both light and color.

Symbolism and Meaning

Starburst and kaleidoscope patterns: Represent brightness, vitality, and the joy of celebration.

Layered colors: Symbolize harmony and depth, reflecting both tradition and modern refinement.

Radiance of “Kirara”: A metaphor for clarity, brilliance, and moments of beauty in daily life.

The symbolic nature of the patterns makes this piece a vessel of cultural meaning, embodying Japanese aesthetics that value both subtlety and brilliance.

Functional Use

With a 320 ml (10.82 oz) capacity, the glass is well-suited for fine drinks, even water and tea. Its weight of 1000 g (2.2 lbs) gives it a solid, balanced presence in the hand. The clarity and brilliance of the cuts enhance the look of any drink, making each pour visually striking.

A Collectible and Display Piece

While highly functional, the Kirara Rock Glass is also a collectible item. It can be used in everyday life or displayed as a piece of glass art. Due to the time-intensive handcrafting process, availability is limited, and out-of-stock orders are treated as pre-orders with delivery on a first-come basis.
