This ornamental plate, created by Hakuichi in Ishikawa Prefecture, features Fujin (Wind) and Raijin (Thunder), two of Japan’s most iconic mythical figures, rendered with scrupulous detail using the Kanazawa gold leaf technique. Crafted from natural horse chestnut wood and finished with lacquer on the reverse, the plate’s front is covered with genuine gold foil, colored foil, and silver-toned aluminum foil to create depth and contrast.
The imagery comes from one of Japan’s most recognized art motifs. Fujin, the Wind God, is shown carrying his wind sack, while Raijin, the Thunder God, strikes his drums to create lightning and storms. These deities embody the forces of nature, often seen as protectors who drive away evil spirits and bring balance to the world. In Japanese culture, depictions of Fujin and Raijin are associated with strength, protection, and good fortune, making them powerful symbols for display in the home.
The Kanazawa gold leaf covering lends a luminous background that shifts with light, enhancing the three-dimensional effect of the design. The plate’s surface captures fine details, from the rippling texture of the clouds to the gods’ dynamic postures, blending traditional aesthetics with precise craftsmanship. When placed in a tokonoma (alcove) or on a stand, it creates an atmosphere of prestige and cultural richness.
Each plate is made to order, taking about three and a half months to complete. Skilled artisans apply the gold leaf in ultra-thin layers, a technique perfected over centuries in Kanazawa, Japan’s center for gold leaf production. This craft demands steady hands, controlled breathing, and careful layering to achieve a flawless finish without tearing the delicate foil.
As a decorative object, it serves both as a work of art and a cultural statement, suitable for collectors, connoisseurs of Japanese craftsmanship, or those wishing to bring a touch of Japanese heritage into their living space.
