This handcrafted Edo Kiriko vase by Kagami Crystal features two traditional Japanese patterns: sasa (bamboo grass) and kagome (tetragonal basket weave). Made from deep red overlay crystal, the piece is cut to reveal intricate clear glass facets beneath, allowing light to refract in sharp, sparkling patterns.
The bamboo grass motif, with its tall, slender leaves reaching upward, represents strength, steady growth, and longevity. In Japanese symbolism, bamboo is admired for its resilience and ability to thrive even in harsh conditions. The kagome pattern, originally derived from basket weaving, is believed to have protective qualities, serving as a charm to ward off misfortune. Together, these designs merge beauty with meaning, making the vase both a decorative object and a symbol of good wishes.
Edo Kiriko, a cut glass technique developed in the early 19th century, involves precise hand-cutting of patterns into colored glass layered over clear crystal. This red crystal overlay requires careful grinding to remove just the right amount of surface color without damaging the clear base. Each cut is executed by an experienced artisan, shaping light-catching facets that give the vase its brilliance.
Weighing over two kilograms, the vase has a substantial presence. Even without flowers, its vibrant color and intricate patterns make it a striking centerpiece. The tall, slightly flared shape is well suited for displaying long-stemmed flowers or branches, but it also works as a standalone art piece in both traditional and modern interiors.
As with all Kagami Crystal works, the vase reflects the company’s heritage since 1934, when it began producing high-grade glassware for the Japanese Imperial Household. Owning this piece is not only acquiring a functional vessel but also preserving a part of Japan’s cultural craftsmanship.
