This Edo Kiriko crystal vase, crafted by Kagami Crystal in Ibaraki, Japan, showcases the intricate artistry of traditional Japanese cut glass. Its design features the Kumiko latticework pattern, inspired by the precise wood joinery used in shoji screens and architectural fittings, here translated into fine glass engraving. Two classic Edo faceting motifs, Kiku Tsunagi (linked chrysanthemum) and Hoshi (star)—are carefully hand-cut into the crystal. These patterns serve both an ornamental and functional role, masking flower stems while allowing light to pass through the clear and colored layers.

The vase’s rich, layered coloration blends deep cobalt blue and warm amber tones, achieved by overlaying colored glass and cutting through it to reveal the clear crystal beneath. The interplay of light across the engraved surfaces produces a striking three-dimensional effect, with geometric and floral motifs appearing to shift and shimmer as the vase is viewed from different angles.

While ideal for holding flowers, this piece is equally captivating as a stand-alone display object. The patterns reflect the Edo-period aesthetic, where craftsmanship, geometry, and symbolism come together. Chrysanthemum designs symbolize longevity and renewal, while star motifs are associated with guidance and protection. The use of crystal ensures high clarity, brilliance, and durability, although the piece must be handled with care.

Kagami Crystal, established in 1934, is Japan’s most renowned Edo Kiriko maker, with works gifted to dignitaries and royalty worldwide. Each vase is cut and polished by skilled artisans, requiring precise control to achieve the symmetrical patterns and flawless finish. This is a statement piece that bridges functional art and cultural heritage, making it suitable for collectors, ceremonial use, or as an heirloom-quality gift.
