This Autumn Leaves Edo Kiriko vase by Kagami Crystal captures the beauty of a Japanese autumn scene. Crafted from deep red overlay crystal, it is cut with patterns that evoke maple leaves drifting across a woven hedge, glowing as though lit by soft autumn sunlight.

Two traditional motifs are featured in its design. The kagome (hexagonal basket weave) symbolizes protection and the warding off of evil, while the asanoha (hemp leaf) pattern represents healthy growth and resilience. Both patterns are long-standing symbols in Japanese decorative arts, chosen for their meaning as well as their striking visual effect.

The Edo Kiriko process begins with a clear crystal base overlaid with a thin layer of colored glass. Skilled artisans then hand-cut the patterns with a rotating wheel, grinding away the surface to reveal the clear crystal beneath. Each cut must be executed with precision to achieve sharp, symmetrical lines. When light passes through the vase, the red glass and clear facets create a dynamic interplay of color and reflection.

The vase’s slender cylindrical shape makes it versatile for flower arrangements, especially tall seasonal stems. Its weight and solid construction give it stability, while its compact footprint allows it to fit easily in various display spaces. Even without flowers, it works as a standalone decorative object, adding warmth and seasonal character to interiors.

Kagami Crystal has been producing fine glassware in Ibaraki, Japan, since 1934 and is recognized as Japan’s leading maker of Edo Kiriko. Its works have been gifted to royalty and dignitaries, ensuring that each piece carries both artistic and cultural significance.
