This modern teapot collection is a collaboration between Studio Wieki Somers (Netherlands) and the historic porcelain craft of Imari-Arita ware from Saga Prefecture, Japan. It brings together centuries-old Japanese ceramic traditions with contemporary European design.
Each teapot is crafted from fine porcelain and features a large stainless steel handle that contrasts with the smooth, rounded body. The design is both functional and sculptural, making the teapot a practical vessel for daily tea drinking as well as a display-worthy piece of art.
The porcelain body showcases a lapis lazuli-inspired gradient that fades from deep indigo to white, echoing the traditional blue-and-white tones of Arita porcelain while applying modern spraying techniques developed by local artisans.
Two Variants
- Mask Variant - White base with cobalt blue spray detailing, a softer gradient effect symbolizing the moon’s glow.
- Spray Variant - Rich lapis lazuli blue dominating the surface, bold and striking in appearance.
Imari-Arita ware has been produced in Japan since the early 17th century, renowned for its strength, refined porcelain body, and distinctive cobalt blue designs. Studio Wieki Somers reinterprets this tradition by working with Japanese artisans skilled in ceramic spray techniques, creating a seamless fusion of tradition and innovation.
The stainless steel handle references modern industrial design while maintaining a balance with the delicate porcelain. The wide arc allows for easy pouring, and the built-in strainer supports functional tea preparation.
The half-moon silhouette of the body reflects harmony and simplicity, qualities central to Japanese aesthetics. The gradient blue recalls the evening sky, oceans, and natural beauty, themes often found in Arita porcelain. The result is a teapot that connects cultural heritage, modern design, and functional use.
