This three-piece porcelain set from Hirado Shozan features a teapot (kanbin) and two cups, all decorated with the traditional Seigaiha (青海波) motif. The Seigaiha pattern, meaning "blue ocean waves," is one of the oldest designs in Japanese art. It symbolizes the vast sea, peace, and the wish for lasting happiness that ripples endlessly into the future.

The set is crafted in Mikawachi ware, a porcelain tradition from Nagasaki known for its fine brushwork and translucent white body. Each piece is hand-painted with overlapping wave designs in a rich indigo blue that deepens toward the center, creating a sense of depth and movement. The balance of blue and white reflects the clarity of water and the calm of the sea.

Cultural Meaning

The Seigaiha motif has been used in Japanese textiles, ceramics, and lacquerware for over a thousand years. It represents not only the blessings of the ocean but also resilience, continuity, and good fortune. Using this set for tea or sake connects daily life with these enduring wishes of prosperity and peace.

Craftsmanship and Materials

Made with porcelain fired at high temperatures, ensuring durability and fine translucency.

Hand-painted by artisans skilled in delicate brush techniques, unique to Mikawachi ware.

Designed for both functional use and as a collectible piece of traditional Japanese craft.

Functional Use

The teapot holds 270ml (9.13 oz), making it ideal for brewing tea or pouring sake. Each cup holds 45ml (1.52 oz), the perfect size for intimate tea sessions or celebratory drinks. The porcelain maintains the temperature of the liquid while providing a smooth, refined drinking experience.
