The Hana Akari Maru vase is a handcrafted work of Tsugaru Vidro glassmaking, created by Hokuyo Glass in Aomori Prefecture, Japan. Its design is inspired by the cherry blossoms at Hirosaki Castle, one of the most celebrated viewing spots in the country. In spring, the castle moat reflects thousands of blooming sakura, creating a layered vision of petals and water; this vase captures that brief moment in glass.

The name Hana Akari refers to cherry blossoms in full bloom that seem to glow even at night, a poetic image cherished in Japanese seasonal traditions. The artisans use the “air-blowing” method, a skill-intensive technique where molten glass is shaped by blowing air into it through a metal pipe. This piece is formed through five layers of colored and clear glass, giving it depth and dimension. Each layer is carefully fused while the glass remains molten, with artisans adding pink and white chips to create the petal-like patterns.

Gold leaf is embedded within the design, adding a shimmering quality that changes with light and viewing angle. This decorative element, combined with the spherical shape, produces a sense of richness while maintaining harmony with the natural theme. Because of the complexity of its creation, production is limited, making each vase a rare example of modern Japanese glass artistry rooted in regional tradition.

Tsugaru Vidro, recognized as a traditional craft of Aomori, often reflects the changing seasons of Japan. In this piece, the bright pinks, soft whites, and warm gold suggest the peak of spring, while the rounded form evokes completeness and renewal. The vase can be used for flower arrangements or displayed as a standalone object. Its symbolism of beauty, renewal, and the impermanence of life—makes it a meaningful gift for occasions such as weddings, anniversaries, and seasonal celebrations.
