This Edo Kiriko rocks glass, named Marimo, is crafted by Junichi Nabetani, a certified Master of Traditional Crafts and one of Japan’s leading glass artisans. Produced by Kagami Crystal in Ibaraki, Japan, the glass represents the finest example of Edo faceted glasswork, a craft with origins in the early 19th century.

The design is inspired by Marimo, a rare freshwater algae that naturally forms into bright green spheres, often regarded as symbols of purity, harmony, and natural beauty. The intricate cut patterns evoke the shimmering glow of Marimo seen through water, allowing the drinker to feel a sense of nature held in the palm of the hand.

 

Design and Symbolism

Kiku Tsunagi Pattern (Chrysanthemum Chain): A traditional motif symbolizing longevity, renewal, and elegance.

Circular Cutouts: Represent ripples of water, capturing the flow of nature and balance.

Marimo Glow Effect: When viewed from above, the starburst design radiates like a living sphere, enhancing the visual depth of each drink.

Craftsmanship and Materials

Each piece is hand-cut from crystal glass, weighing 600 g (1.32 lbs) for a substantial, balanced feel. The deep precision cutting reflects and refracts light, producing striking geometric patterns that change with the angle of view.

As with all Edo Kiriko glass, the cutting is performed by skilled artisans using traditional methods handed down for generations. This craftsmanship ensures that every glass is one-of-a-kind.
