This Edo Kiriko rock glass, designed and cut by master craftsman Tomokazu Noguchi, is a work of traditional Japanese artistry. Produced by Kagami Crystal in Ibaraki, Japan, it blends symbolic motifs with the precision of Edo cut glass.
The surface showcases hexagonal patterns, a design rooted in the tortoise shell, a symbol of longevity and stability in Japanese culture. This geometric form has long been used as a protective and auspicious motif, representing resilience and unbroken harmony. Alongside this, the “kiku tsunagi” (chrysanthemum-linked) pattern adds cultural depth, as chrysanthemums in Japan symbolize longevity, imperial beauty, and renewal. Together, these patterns form a visual balance of strength and grace.
The glass also incorporates dynamic starburst cuts at the base, creating striking reflections that shift as the glass is tilted. From above, the layered design reveals a radiating flower-like shape, giving the glass both symbolic meaning and striking visual character. The “Kasane-Irome” layered coloring technique infuses the crystal with overlapping hues of violet and golden amber, giving the piece a sense of depth and brilliance that changes with light.
Functionally, this Edo Kiriko rock glass is designed for whiskey, shochu, sake, or any refined spirit. Its solid weight (800-1000 g) and capacity (320 ml) make it practical for daily use while also carrying the dignity of a ceremonial object. The clarity of crystal and depth of cut ensure brilliant refractions, enhancing the enjoyment of each pour.
This glass is more than tableware. It is a cultural artifact that carries symbolic protection, celebrates nature, and embodies the Japanese tradition of finding beauty in precision. As a gift, it represents both meaning and craftsmanship, suited for milestones such as anniversaries, birthdays, or as a treasured keepsake for collectors of Japanese glassware.
