These Edo Kiriko cut glass pairs showcase one of Japan’s most celebrated traditional crafts, recognized as both a National Traditional Craft and a Tokyo Traditional Craft. Each pair is handmade in Tokyo by Kimoto Glassware, carrying on centuries of skill in glass cutting.
Two styles are available:
1. Old Pair - wider, shorter glasses ideal for whiskey, sake, or cocktails.
2. Tumbler Pair - taller, slimmer glasses perfect for water, tea, or highballs.
Both pairs feature the same refined Star Anise Roe (Kagome & fish scale) pattern, created by deep and precise cuts in colored glass layered over clear crystal.
Symbolism and Design
Kagome Basket Pattern: Based on an ancient woven bamboo design, the Kagome motif is believed to ward off evil and protect the household, making these glasses meaningful gifts.
Fish Scale Motif: Symbolizes good fortune, abundance, and resilience, while reflecting light with brilliance.
Octagonal Pattern: Represents balance, harmony, and prosperity, with light refracting beautifully in all directions.
Together, these patterns embody strength, longevity, and elegance, while also serving as protective charms in Japanese tradition.
Craftsmanship
Edo Kiriko glassmaking dates back to the early 19th century. Each piece is handcrafted from soda glass with layers of red or blue overlay, then carefully cut to reveal clear crystal beneath. The precision of each fine line requires years of training, making every glass a unique work of art.
The red and blue pairing represents traditional Japanese duality, fire and water, balance and contrast, making them meaningful for weddings, anniversaries, or milestone celebrations.
Practical Use
Old Pair: φ8.3 × H8.7 cm, 200ml (6.76 oz), 230g - ideal for fine drinks.
Tumbler Pair: φ7.5 × H10.6 cm, 200ml (6.76 oz), 180g - suited for water, tea, and cocktails.
These glasses are not safe for microwaves, dishwashers, or ovens. They should be washed by hand to preserve their clarity and cut detail.
