Variant 1: Tumbler
The Black Kiriko Glass by Satsuma Vidro is a rare example of Satsuma faceted cut glass, crafted in Kagoshima Prefecture. Unlike other colors of Kiriko glass, black glass blocks light, making it extremely difficult to cut. Because artisans cannot see the blade while carving, every detail must be guided by intuition and years of skill. This process takes two to three times longer than other colors, making each piece an exceptional work of craftsmanship.
The glass features contrasting patterns: fine, star-like cuts across the upper section and vertical faceting below, creating a striking balance between tradition and modern design. The result is a piece that stands out on any table, with a timeless presence.
Satsuma faceted glass has deep roots in Japanese history. It was first developed in the late Edo period in the Satsuma Domain, but disappeared after only 20 years, earning the name “phantom faceting.” The craft was revived about a century later and has since been handed down as a traditional art form.
The black Kiriko variation was only achieved in 2006 by Satsuma Bidoro Kogei, marking the first successful creation of this color in the industry. Black symbolizes elegance, depth, and refinement in Japanese aesthetics, while the crystal layer beneath captures light, creating subtle highlights within the darkness.
With a 200 ml (6.76 oz) capacity, the glass is the perfect size for water, tea, juice, or cocktails. Its balanced weight makes it easy to hold, while its cut patterns provide both grip and beauty. Whether used daily or for special gatherings, the contrast of black and clear crystal enhances the appearance of any drink.
Despite its traditional origins, this design feels modern and pairs easily with both Japanese and non-Japanese table settings. It brings refinement to everyday dining while being elegant enough for formal occasions.
Each glass is packaged in a paulownia wood box tied with a Sanada string, reflecting Japanese traditions of fine gift presentation. This makes it a meaningful gift for weddings, anniversaries, or housewarmings, especially for those who value Japanese craftsmanship.

Variant 2: Old Glass
This black Kiriko old glass, made by Satsuma Vidro in Kagoshima Prefecture, represents one of the most challenging and refined expressions of Japanese cut glass. Unlike traditional Edo Kiriko or Satsuma Kiriko in vivid colors, black crystal does not let light pass through, making the cutting process exceptionally difficult. Craftsmen cannot rely on sight while carving; instead, they depend on years of experience, intuition, and precision. This technique takes two to three times longer to complete than colored Kiriko, requiring patience and mastery.
The glass is carved with intricate patterns, balancing geometric precision with organic flow. The top band features lattice-style cuts that catch light in small star-like reflections, while the lower section carries elongated cuts that add rhythm and vertical movement. The deep black crystal contrasts with its transparent rim, creating a dramatic sense of depth and elegance.
Symbolically, black in Japanese aesthetics is associated with strength, dignity, and quiet refinement. It carries a sense of solemnity and timeless beauty, often linked with understated luxury. Combined with the Kiriko tradition, this piece becomes not just a drinking glass but also an object of cultural expression and heritage.
Functionally, the 200 ml capacity makes it suitable for fine drinks as well. Its lighter weight compared to other Kiriko glasses makes it easy to handle while retaining the brilliance and resonance of fine crystal. Each glass comes in a paulownia wood box with a Sanada string, reinforcing its role as a formal and meaningful gift. Paulownia boxes are traditionally used in Japan to store valuable objects, symbolizing protection and care for what is inside.
This black Kiriko glass embodies both rarity and craftsmanship. It is ideal for collectors of Japanese glassware, connoisseurs of traditional crafts, and those seeking a gift that carries cultural depth and symbolic meaning.
