This Black Kiriko cut glass is a modern interpretation of traditional Satsuma Kiriko, a craft that originated in Kagoshima, Japan nearly 200 years ago. Once thought lost after the fall of the Edo government, Satsuma cut glass has been revived by skilled artisans who continue to preserve and innovate this delicate technique.
Craftsmanship and Technique
Unlike colored glass that allows artisans to see through during carving, black crystal glass does not let light pass through. This makes the cutting process far more difficult, requiring years of skill, intuition, and precision. Every line and facet is carved without visibility, relying solely on the artisan’s mastery. As a result, producing a black Kiriko glass takes two to three times longer compared to other colored glasses.
The glass features a tall, slender form with detailed patterns that reflect light in sharp brilliance, showing both elegance and restraint. Each piece is made from crystal glass and comes in a paulownia wood box with a Sanada string, which reflects Japanese tradition and careful presentation.
Symbolism and Cultural Value
In Japanese culture, black is a color of strength, dignity, and depth. Paired with the refined cut glass patterns, this piece carries both artistic and symbolic weight, making it suitable not only for personal use but also as a meaningful gift. The craftsmanship reflects the fusion of tradition and innovation, respecting historical Satsuma glassmaking while introducing modern refinement.
Functional Use
With a capacity of 190ml (6.42 oz), this glass is ideal for enjoying champagne, wine, or premium sake. Its weight and height give a balanced hand feel, making each sip ceremonial. It is not suitable for heat or dishwashing, as it is a non-heat-resistant crystal glass that requires careful handling.
