This Satsuma Kuroko black Kiriko glass is a newly created design that brings a modern style to a centuries-old Japanese craft. Handmade in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, it represents the height of Japanese glassmaking techniques.
Traditional Craft with Modern Elegance
The art of Satsuma cut glass (Satsuma Kiriko) began in the Edo period and was known as the “phantom glass” because it was produced for only 20 years. Revived 100 years later, the tradition lives on through the skill of modern artisans.
This glass is created by layering transparent crystal with colored glass, then cutting deeply into the surface to form intricate patterns. The effect is a shimmering, faceted brilliance unique to Japanese faceted glassware.
Rare Black Glass - Advanced Cutting Technology
The striking black glass color was achieved only in 2006 by Satsuma Vidro. Unlike other colors, black does not let light pass through, which means artisans cannot see the rotating blade while carving. Instead, they rely on many years of experience, precision, and intuition.
Producing one black Kiriko glass takes two to three times longer than other colors, requiring advanced hand-cutting technology. The result is a bold and elegant design that combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary luxury.
