These Ikari Type 100 Momme candles are traditional Japanese candles (warōsoku), hand-crafted in Kyoto by Nakamura Rosoku, a workshop with centuries of candle-making heritage. Each candle is hand-painted by Kyoto artisans with motifs rich in cultural meaning, transforming every piece into both a functional light source and a work of art.
Unlike Western candles, Japanese candles are made from plant-based wax (Japan wax) and feature a hollow washi-paper core. This structure creates a natural airflow, producing a large, swaying flame that moves with a gentle rhythm. The flicker of the flame has been compared to the natural “1/f fluctuation” seen in heartbeats, flowing water, and the glow of fireflies - patterns that have a calming, healing effect on the mind.
The flame is steady and resilient, burning even in light breezes, with less oily smoke and soot, making it suitable for indoor use. Each candle comes with a Kitayama cedar candlestick for proper display and burning.
These candles are not only practical but also deeply symbolic. The hand-painted designs include powerful animals, auspicious symbols, and seasonal motifs, each carrying layers of meaning rooted in Japanese tradition. They are ideal for use in meditation, interior décor, and as meaningful gifts.
